Late Summer

The other weekend we found ourselves in Cumberland, Wisconsin.  It was Rutabaggie Days.  (Personally, I always say root-a-bag-uh, but I heard so many "baggies" that afternoon, I couldn't resist.)  Pete indulged us with a nostalgic tour.

Fast Bear!

The backyard has been off-limits for the last month and a half.  Mosquitoes (!) came out in mid-July and have been ferocious!  Poor Berit gets devoured within seconds.  We haven't gotten to use the swing as much as we'd like but the approaching cooler weather may kill off some of the devils.

Meanwhile, Pete has been building at a frenetic pace.  The late start, coupled with lots of Berit time, has meant progress is harder to achieve.  I am continuously amazed however.  He can do all this and cook too!

Taking shape...

Berit and I are looking forward to enjoying the fruits of Pete's labor.  I think I could pre-retire to the woods tomorrow.  It is so incredibly nice to get out of the city; we just weren't meant to be town kids!

The Bear in the Woods

Ah, happy September!

Berit is 11! (months, that is!)

It is hard to believe that we are closing in on our little chickpea's first birthday!  I definitely think that the 10 months of pregnancy took twice as long as the first 11 months of Berit's entertaining life...but then I was largely pregnant, my feet were swollen and it was 95 degrees for four months.

What does Berit do now?

She runs (dangerously), hops, squats, brings you all kinds of things, points, waves, kisses (open mouth), hugs, climbs up stairs at lightning speed, practicing going down a few steps at a time (backwards) until she decides that is too slow and turns in anticipation of a swan dive back down the stairs.

She does not hold still, as her 11-month old snapshots demonstrate:

Standing

Don't make me sit...

Yelling while squatting

The fake cry face

A smile for her papa

Refusing to show momma how tall she is

She loves carrying things with handles: sand bucket, shoe boxes, purses, camera case...anything you can imagine.

Berit still loves walking her dogs and she does a really good job of getting them wound up.  Usually she gets to the backpack or the leashes and brings them to you as a sign.  Here, she and Sitka wait for me.

And here, Berit decides to walk herself.  This is just one of her "raised by dogs" habits.  She has a tendency to carry things in her mouth like her fur siblings. Pete has caught her trying to eat by putting her face to the floor, while the dogs put their noses in their bowls.

She is a very funny kid.  (She gets that from her papa.)  But has quite the stubborn streak (she gets that from him too!)  Sleep is still the enemy.  Sometimes, even the suggestion of it is enough to send her over the edge.

Reacting to the news that post-walk means naptime for everyone

Berit Hits Ten

The Bear is walking, yelling, crawling, chasing and makes us laugh endlessly.  Her walk is often a run with arms raised above her head yelling the entire time.  She's a bit of a clown.

She has given up her swing-addiction and takes naps in her crib!

She claps, points, plays peek a boo and climbs stairs very quickly.  Going down is a little dicey.

Her comedic timing is unprecedented for a ten month old.

Berit thinks that people sneezing are very funny. (Or is it "sneezing people"?)  I try to apologize for her behavior.  Then she starts with the pointing and I give up.

She continues to be relatively bald and is mistaken for a boy since we try to minimize the pink when we can...plus, people just can't grasp her name.  It is often Barrett the boy.  Oh well.

This last month was a difficult one at day care.  Our two favorite teachers left the infant room, one left the city entirely, and the Bear had a record number of crashes, bruises, bites and bangs.  I don't like signing multiple accident reports daily!  Alas, she got sturdier on her feet and the new(er) teachers adapted and so far, things are looking up.  She is a bruiser for sure.

Berit sits in her high chair now, having recently retired the bumbo/tray (very sad for us).  She loves watermelon, although I am realizing that watermelon stains and gets everywhere and really is not a convenient baby food.  She has also been trying out new stuff, like pancakes, blueberry yogurt, toast (with butter of course) and raspberries.  She likes black beans for now, but only if they are frozen, and bananas still, but now only if they are in the peel.  She tried peas again but spit them out or threw them over her shoulder. I appreciated that she tried and that she thought she was tricking me into thinking she was eating them.

She still eats sweet potatoes and apples and she is bottle-free!  This last bit was quite easy since she never really liked bottles and has been drinking from a big kid cup (with assistance) for months.  I am glad that there was one perk in her resisting bottles.

She loves, loves feeding her dogs.  We have a strict dogs-keep-away policy until we know the meal is over.  Berit would much rather feed her entire meal to her fur siblings; she's very gratuitous.

She is very adept at pulling the "safety" covers out of the electrical outlets.  Sometimes she takes them out and then tries to plug other cords into the sockets. I don't know if she's brilliant or the covers are a sham.  Either way, it makes constant vigilance necessary.  Berit also likes chewing on cords.  She's a bit rodent in that regard.

B in a Bonnet

Berit has been having fun with friends, eating dirt from momma's new garden beds and going to baseball games.

First it was to see papa in the Guns and Hoses showdown (that's cops vs fire) -- she enjoyed clapping and waving from the stands.  Then it was to see the Duluth Huskies with the Fryberger office.  It was a very chilly game and someone forgot socks and a jacket.  Good thing Bear runs hot!  Most recently, it was a drive to the big metropolis to see the Twins on the 4th of July with our friends Anna and Mike.  That was too hot -- we had to give up amazing seats for some A/C -- and Berit was mistaken for a boy three times!

Watching the Twins lead -- in 103 degree seats!

What a view!

It's been hot so Bear has to sprawl under the fan to get relief

I swear, I do not let her eat caramels.

The Nine Monther Update

I have no excuse, justification, plan for improvement or empty promise of better-next-time.

Here is a little progress report and some photos and you are lucky to have it.

Shipped my first deposit to the California Milk Bank; Pete is glad to see space opening in that freezer!
This month was a challenge.
Photos had to be taken as soon as she woke up or there was no chance of getting anything but a blur. So these were taken two days late.
Berit is extremely busy from dawn to 9 pm -- yes, we know this is not a sustainable or responsible bedtime but it is summer so it is very light and we would never see her if she went to bed at 6:30. I feel guilty, but only a teensy bit.

Berit is twice the size of Wolfie

And he cannot keep up with her!

As you can see, she will not sit still...

And prefers standing over everything

Berit took her first trip to the vet -- Dr. Pitts thought she was a delight and a lucky little girl to have three German Shepherd dogs!

At the end of May she started inch-bug crawling.

She got tooth numbers 3 and 4  over a weekend -- they are little fangs since she had not gotten the middle teeth yet (yes, I'm giving away next month's update!)

She went to Grand Marais and stayed at GiGi's (with momma) for the first time.  She visited with Brienne and Hiver too.

Two weeks after the inch bug crawling she started speed-crawling.  It is almost as terrifying to her parents as speed-dating.

Within two days she started surfing the couch (better known as "cruising" by parents in the know) which quickly transitioned to surfing anything that appeared solid: the walls, the dogs, paper bag, swinging doors, giant balls that are usually in the mouths of the dogs...clearly our lives just got very exciting!

Ma, stop!

Bear and her Family

So far, Berit has been getting along quite well with her zany family. They take turns looking after her and she convinces them she's brilliant and perfect. We love it.
